5 Skincare Steps to Clear Blemishes on Acne-Prone Skin

Written while listening to the ‘20Something & Living‘ podcast!

Acne is my worst enemy and we’ve had beef since age 9. I felt so embarrassed and out of place among my peers because of the blemishes that appeared on my face at a young age. I recently asked a few family members what they use on their skin and all of their answers were simple: soap and water! I was in complete shock at this answer because I have my skincare routine mastered down to a science, and it involves a whole lot more than just soap and water. I’ve gone through so many treatments, ups/downs, and trial runs when it came to my skincare routine, and I finally found a system that works best for my skin!

1. Cleanse

This first step may be a no-brainer, but the tricky part is finding the right cleanser for your face. One of the worst feelings in the world is when you do your daily routine for your skin and don’t see any results. Been there, done that, and got the t-shirt. I’ve tried countless facial cleansers and these two have been my staples for the past few months.

My Choices:

Clean & Clear Acne Triple Clear Cleanser

CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser

Both of these cleansers give me life! It comes out like a gel and I usually add one pump to my Clarisonic brush head and one to my hands. I apply it to my face until it lathers up and then I rub my finger over the brush of my Clarisonic until the soap lathers on that and then I begin the cleansing process. Once it’s rinsed off, I instantly feel a cool and refreshing clean to my skin.

2. Tone

Toning your face is an important follow-up step after cleansing your face. Even though your skin may feel clean and refreshed from the cleanser, there’s a strong possibility that your pores still have oil, dirt, and other debris in them. Toner is essential in getting rid of those impurities and helping to hydrate your skin, bring it back to its proper pH balance.

My choice:

Humphrey’s Witch Hazel Astringent

3. Treat

If you have acne prone skin like I do, benzyl peroxide is a MUST when it comes to treating the skin. I cannot stress this enough. Benzyl peroxide’s main job is to eliminate bacteria in your pores, thus reducing acne. The only downside is that benzyl peroxide can cause discoloration in certain clothes; I’ve ruined many a night shirt with this stuff back in the day.

My choice:

Clean & Clear Persa-Gel 10

4. Moisturize

My favorite part of my skincare process! Moisturizers help keep the skin moist and prevents your skin from drying out. This step is especially important after using a toner and benzyl peroxide, which are two products that can dry out the skin. A moisturizer is needed to bring your skin back to life.

My choice:

Clean & Clear Advantage Acne Control Moisturizer

5. Protect

Protecting our skin, especially as a person of color, can often be the most overlooked step. Skin cancer is real and it effects everyone. Sunscreen is essential in protecting your skin from the sun and making it easier for your skin to heal from dark marks. It’s also the hardest for me to find the perfect sunscreen for me.

My choice:

Glossier Invisible Shield Daily Sunscreen – SPF 35

Bonus: Night Creams

It’s perfectly fine to stick to the first five steps for your nighttime routine, but I like to give my skin a little something extra while I rest at night. The night creams I use not only feel amazing and make my skin feel soft, but they also give my skin a fresh feel when I wake up the next day. If you have dark marks on your skin that you want to brighten for an overall even skin tone, the Freeman Brightening Overnight Mask works wonders!

My Choices:

Freeman Brightening Overnight Mask

These five skincare steps are so crucial for me in order to reduce the number of breakouts I have. Keep in mind that the products I’ve featured in this post work for me and may not necessarily be the best choice for you! My skin is still a mystery to me at times and I’m still figuring out what it likes and doesn’t like at the age of 26. Be patient and you will find all the things you need to get flawless skin.
